The funding rate is the payment that buyers (longs) and sellers (shorts) of a perpetual contract exchange at regular intervals. Enter your position, the rate and how long you hold it above: the calculator gives what you pay or receive, per payment, per day and over the period, and the annualised rate. The calculation runs in your browser; nothing is sent.

The funding formula

Each payment is the value of your position multiplied by the funding rate:

Payment = position value × funding rate

The position value is its size at the contract's price, not the margin you put up. The annualised rate is the funding rate multiplied by the number of payments in a year:

Annualised rate = funding rate × 8,760 ÷ interval in hours

Who pays, the long or the short?

When the funding rate is positive, longs pay shorts. When it is negative, shorts pay longs. The calculator shows what you pay as a negative amount and what you receive as a positive one.

An example on Hyperliquid

A $10,000 long on a BTC perpetual, with a funding rate of 0.0013% per hour, held for 7 days:

StepCalculationResult
Per payment$10,000 × 0.0013%$0.13
Per day$0.13 × 24$3.12
Over 7 days$0.13 × 168$21.84
Annualised rate0.0013% × 8,76011.39%

The long pays these amounts, and the short receives them. A funding rate of 0.01% every 8 hours comes to $1 per payment on $10,000, $3 a day and 10.95% a year.

Each platform's interval

Hyperliquid pays funding every hour. Many other platforms pay it every 8 hours, some every 4 hours or every hour depending on the contract: choose the interval shown on the contract's page.

Frequently asked questions

Is funding worked out on the margin or on the position?

On the position. At 10x leverage, $1,000 of margin carries a $10,000 position, and funding is worked out on $10,000.

What does a negative funding rate mean?

That shorts pay longs. Usually, the perpetual is then trading below the price of its spot market.

Is the annualised rate what I will pay over a year?

No. The funding rate changes at every interval: the annualised rate says what the current rate would come to if it stayed the same all year.

Are my numbers sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs in your browser; nothing is sent or kept.
